Are Solid State Drives Taking Over?

Solid state drives are the new in-thing these days. But exiguous did we know that the technology used in these drives has been nearby for quite some time but has only recently been commercialized. This record will focus on what an Ssd is and what its benefits are for future users.

What is a solid state drive?

Laptop Ssd

Solid state is a term coined for electronic circuitry that is totally built out of semiconductors and was originally used to define electronics that used semiconductors rather than vacuum tubes such as the straightforward transistor radio. These days, most electronics are built nearby semiconductors and chips. About Ssd, it refers to the fact that the customary storage medium is straight through semiconductors instead of a magnetic media such as a hard drive.

You might assess it to a flash drive that plugs into the Usb port which is partially true since both flash and solid state both use memory chips that are non-volatile for retaining data even without power. Their main inequity is in the form factor wherein the flash drive is primarily designed to be external and this drive is designed to be installed internally in place of the customary hard drives.

Traditional hard drives and Ssd looks alike face which was done on purpose to allow it to fit in any place a customary hard drive fits. It can be located in a laptop or a desktop just like a common hard drive since they have the same dimensions as well as using the Ata or Sata interfaces.

The advantage

Solid state drives are near excellent and are in fact taking over the customary hard drive very soon. Of course, being new in the market, they are a bit on the high-priced side which is understandable because we know that they will eventually come to be economy as time goes by. As far as advantages go, there's in fact nothing to contest about. There are three main reasons though as to why this kind of drive is better.

• Faster data way - It's so fast that you won't even see the Windows Xp loading screen.
• Less power usage - Unlike customary hard drives, it uses less power production your rig more vigor efficient.
• High Reliability - Because there are no keen parts inside, there is in fact nothing that can sidetrack it.

These alone are sufficient to convince anything to make the switch and if the prices of such data storage gismo lower in the next few months, more citizen will certainly make the jump.

2011 Best Netbook Selling Under $300 Dollars

If you assess the best sub-0 netbook against the high-end 0 multimedia gaming netbook from Sony, chances are you may decide there is no need to pay for 12 hours battery life, 10 inch high-definition Lcd display, Ssd hard disk, Nvidia ion graphics etc. Indeed, these are nice to have features that are supposed to let you enjoy Hd movies on your netbook while you are on a long flight, play 3D games with approved graphics and no lagging etc. I do not know about you, but personally I do not care much or enjoying doing those computing tasks on a 10 inch Lcd display.

The specifications for netbooks under 0 are very respectable, and can deal with all the web surfing tasks you will encounter. The things to take note will be the microscopic Ram, poor battery performance, difficult to use keyboard, weak bundled software suite. These are the typical areas where low funds netbook makers tend to cut corners, so make sure you are aware when choosing to get a new netbook.

Laptop Ssd

With their small size, light weight and good battery life, they are perfect for enterprise travelers who are tired of lugging a 6 lbs laptop around the world with sore shoulders. When netbooks were first released on the market, they were an instant hit with girls, due to their sure physical features.

College students with a low computer funds can also think these cheap netbooks under 0 although those in architecture, accounting, fabricate & engineering etc are great off with a suited laptop and a bigger Lcd display. Not every software application will be useable on a netbook. Ms Excel, AutoCad, Matlab etc will not be so suitable, even on a 0 multimedia netbook.

One way to buy a netbook with good technical specifications at cheaper prices is to think used or refurbished units. You can find advertisements on campus from other students that are off loading their current netbooks because they wanted to buy the newest model from Apple, Lenovo, Asus etc.

Otherwise, check out the cheaper Acer Aspire netbooks. These entry-level units have very good specs and features for the price. For example, they even come with built-in media card readers and webcams to make it easy for video conferencing or uploading photos from your digital cameras. If you want these from other netbook makers such as Sony, you may need to pay an additional one 0 more.

Solid State Hard Drives - A User's Perspective

I recently purchased a Dell Laptop with an Ssd drive in it. I must say I was very impressed with how fast it was on boot up. After that, the excitement of it leveled off from there. I guess the greatest advantage I saw from it was the endurance that it has as well as the battery life is right on good than using a regular hard drive.

Some sites, including SamSung are touting ultimate 60Mb/sec speeds. I have only noticed a moderate speed up compared to my 5400 Rpm hard drive. When I compared it with my highend laptop that has a 7200 Rpm drive it was near or just below the same speeds when doing side by side comparisons.

Laptop Ssd

What was in fact cool about the Ssd was when I started playing a video and in fact shook my laptop it ran as if nothing was happening. I took an older laptop of mine (I have a ton of them), and played the same video and shook the laptop and it roughly immediately crashed. For all you road warriors out there Ssd is right on a must.

My advice, don't buy the Ssd's for speed or fast boot up times, the price does not by comparison it, but rather buy them if you want reliability and longer lasting laptop. I have been in fee of supplying laptops for years to a traveling consultant base, and the lifespan on laptops due to hard drive failures is pretty short. I was replacing Hd and reimaging roughly 90% of my time. Once I started purchasing the Ssd's I have not seen any of them fail yet. Its only been a few months, but check back and I will contribute updates as I move forward.

The MacBook Air - Ultrathin and Superlight - Does it Deliver? A report

At the starting of 2008 Apple introduced the spectacular MacBook Air. Even their own computers, notebooks and other gadgets didn't offer such an elegant fabricate and such covenant measures. This is undisputed. When it comes to Apples pricing, this is where opinions differ somewhat.

The small version with Intel's Core 2 Duo P7500 Cpu, 2 Gbyte memory and a 80-Gb Hdd, (which you can replace for a proud 900 Dollars with a 64-Gbyte-Ssd) goes for nearby $ 2000. This Solid State Disk and a1.8-Ghz-Cpu can be found in the bigger MacBook Air. Price tag: $ 2.900

Laptop Ssd

The power of the smaller model should be adequate for most tasks at the office, surfing the net and playback movies, pictures and music. Even elderly and undemanding games will run. For all things else there is not adequate power.

Features: Not too many.Due to the very low weight and the thin body, the list of features resembles the menu of a fancy french cuisine restaurant: short and to the point. The version tested here came with Webcam, Bluetooth, 300-Mbit-Wlan and a Micro-Dvi-Port, where you can attach an external monitor via the enclosed adapter.

You would expect a diminutive more than just one Usb-Port. Buying an supplementary Usb Hub seems very recommendable, so you can attach the -optional- Dvd burner and some other devices at the same time, like memory sticks, mouse or a printer, for that matter. The m.o. Burner will only work on your MacBook Air, neither on any Pc nor someone else Apple-Notebook. In order to work the gadget needs about four times as much power as the Usb proper allows. The widely spread Firewire and a Lan-Port are missing, also.

What you hear through the build in mono speakers is rather mediocre and can't be compared with any lowly Mp3 Player. Some say this does not suit the MacBook's otherwise very fancy and costly appearance.

The elegant look and the plane aluminum outside do not make for easy servicing. Only Apple technicians can turn your hard drive or replace the power unit. The only thing that breaks the plane outside is the exquisite keyboard, the hidden air vents and the cover over the external jacks. Some users have found a way to at least turn the battery pack, but waive the 12 month warranty by doing so.

Keypad and Touchpad: Well done and inventive. Apple doesn't imbed the keyboard into the notebooks housing, but inserts it from underneath through prefab cuts. This doesn't only look great, but also prevents these tiny cracks that catch crumbs and dust. The MacBook Air's keyboard comes with its own backlight illumination, which adapts to the surrounding light. The intensity can be regulated regardless of the one of the screen. You'll get used to it after some days and in fact the keyboard of the MacBook Air turnes out to be very pleasant.

The very large Touchpad knows some tricks it learned from the iPhone: By spreading two fingers while finding at a picture, it increases the size. With three fingers, you can use the Safari browser, but this doesn't work with the Firefox. Most of these small functionalities do not radically transform the user experience, but are part of the charm of the Apple products.

The Display, thought about the best in its league, is very engaging and ideal fort he outside use.

The mirrored 13.3-inch display is supported by a backlight illumination. This makes it very engaging (410.1 cd/m²) and makes for very good unlikeness (973:1). No other notebook features a best display.

Windows Os: Not recommended. If you buy a MacBook Air and try to setup Windows Xp or Vista via the "Boot Camp" menu, you'll bound to be disappointed. The vents are running fulltime, your sound doesn't work or the display looses its sharpness. The touchpad won't work properly and there's no reserve for your Webcam and the SuperDrive. So it's very recommended to run the MacBook Air with its native MacOs only.

Mobility and Battery Life: very light and very good autonomy time. There is no thinner or lighter 13.3-inch Notebook around. Using the preinstalled MacOs 10.5 Leopard the 37-Watt-batterypack runs for five hours, doing a Word-Test, and 2 hours using its full Cpu power. While selecting the eco mode proposed by Mac Os X and the screen luminosity set to 75% of his capacity, the MacBook Air was able to work for 3h15 before the low battery warning showed up. This are very good results and again make for exquisite usage.

Conclusion

Without a doubt, Apples MacBook Air is a great designer piece. But the fabricate cost quite a few compromises in regard to functionality: there's only one Usb-Port, no optical drives and a Mono-Speaker, to name a few. The carrying out of the MacBook Air will suffice for light traveller users i.e. Bloggers, connected fanatics, journalists, and other sales representatives. They will have no difficulty working with photos, fabricate bills or prepare a presentation, all profiting from his exquisite flagstone Lcd screen. So, the MacBook Air is a engaging and very gorgeous Notebook, that guaranties its owner a lot of greedy looks, but the same owner needs to make do with a few downsides, too.

The Sony Vaio P Series - The Debut Sony Mini Laptop

At last, a Sony mini laptop is here, the Sony Vaio P Series. Although not in the form some originally expected, an adapted Via Openbook, the Sony Vaio P series has all the size and weight credentials that a netbooks should have. It weighs a wee 638g, that's around two thirds the weight of the customary netbook; the Asus Eee Pc 701. Like the heavenly thin MacBook Air, the P-series is also under 2cm thick at 19.8mm and only "slightly larger than an office envelope."

But the impressive specs don't stop there...

Laptop Ssd

The Led backlit screen, 8 inches across and in a widescreen format, has a surprisingly high 1600x768 resolution (compared to 1024x600 for your everyday netbook). At that resolution, it's unlikely you'll ever need much side-scrolling again, since most webpages aren't that wide. Battery life is stated as 4 hours for the standard model, or 8 for the large capacity battery - enough for a full days work.

My jaw hit the deck when I saw how much Ssd drive storehouse the P series is offering - up to 128Gb. Ssd or Solid State storehouse requires no spicy parts and is thus very durable. But it's very high-priced to produce a large storehouse Ssd installation which has meant most netbooks have had around 16Gb tops. A hard drive version is also ready offering 60Gbs storage.

Sony has incorporated some unquestionably clever extra features. Firstly, a Gps which needs no internet association (in the Usa and Canada only - more of that later), Windows Vista - a first for a computer this small and an array of connectivity options; Wireless Lan 3G Broadband, 802.11n Lan and Bluetooth so you're associated wherever there's movable phone signal. Other more standard features like the 'Motion Eye' webcam and microphone are also included, not to forget the Sony 'xross media bar', coarse with the PlayStation 3 and Bravia Hdtv range.

The inclusion of Vista is interesting. Most netbooks haven't strayed above 1Gb of Ram whereas the new Sony has 2Gb. Processing power is a bit on the light side however since the P series will only come with a 1.33Ghz processor from Intel, not the Intel Atom coarse with most netbooks - maybe suggesting how much Sony wants to disassociate itself with the "cheap and cheerful" netbook look. As we previously mentioned in our article on the Vaio Tt - try searching netbook on Sony's Vaio site - nothing.

Of course, it's only just been made ready in the Usa (today 8th January) - beginning at 9 which works out about £600 at today's (painful) exchange rate. And here's the good bit...

It hits the shelves in the Uk as well as in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Russia in February. We can't wait to get our hands on one.
